Howdy! My name is Alicia Immel. I am a junior RPTS major with an emphasis in Youth Development and a certificate in Event Management. I am the first intern at Chartwells Higher Education at Texas A&M University because Chartwells has only been on campus since the spring of 2012. For my internship I have worked in the office learning the operations and logistics behind all of the events. I have also worked in the kitchen as a prep cook to learn the culinary side behind catering for events. I also work in the Front of House as one of the servers and then later on as the event supervisor. I have greatly enjoyed the experience of this internship.
While the hours are hectic, working events is the best part of the job. Sometimes you have to go in at 5 in the morning because you have a breakfast that starts at 630 and you have to get everything set up at least 30 minutes before the event starts. But it is worth it when the clients come up to you and say that they loved everything and they will use Chartwells again. It is amazing how many people you will meet and make connections with. When they say that the Aggie Network is big, they aren't exaggerating. A lot of the events held are for the 12th Man Foundation, the Presidents Office, and the Chancellors Office. The guests at these events are often some of the best connections you can make. It is always a great feeling when someone you have just met says you are doing a wonderful job and that they are glad that you are an Aggie. I can not count how many times I have been offered jobs by these organizations, asking me to be their new event coordinator for their new and upcoming programs. This internship has been a wonderful experience and has vastly helped my future.
